The Fairy-Forest

Fanal, Madaira

Endless fog, strangly growing trees and an overwhelmingly strong wind... It's my favourite place on Madeira.

Located in the northern part of Madeira's mountains, the misty forest of Fanal consists of scattered single trees on a rather normal cow pasture.

However, the entire field is covered by a thick and omnipresent fog. It blocks all sunlight and creates a mysterious atmosphere.

Sometimes, the fog becomes so thick, you feel like you can taste it. Then, without any warning, a strong wind blows it all away. You can see the entire field for the first time. But before you can even realize how small it actually is, the fog returns and the world vanishes under a white cloak.

In the omnipresent fog, the trees grow in bizarre ways, forming branches that reach out for you.
